Mr. Gillis was a founder of Athene Holding Ltd. in 2009, and served as the Chief Executive Officer and board member of Athene Life Re Ltd. until his retirement in 2019.

Prior to founding Athene, Mr. Gillis was a Senior Managing Director of Bear Stearns & Company and was Head of the Bear Stearns’ Insurance Solutions Group. In this position, he led Bear’s entry into the funding agreement backed note business and created the turn key Premium Asset Trust Series (“PATS”) program. Prior to joining Bear, Mr. Gillis spent over three years at GenRe Financial Products providing ALM hedging solutions to U.S. life companies.

Mr. Gillis serves on the boards of Catalina Holdings (Bermuda) Ltd., Athene Co Invest Reinsurance Affiliate Ltd. (“ACRA”), Bermuda International Long Term Insurers and Reinsurers Association (“BILTIR”), the Association of Bermuda International Companies (“ABIC”), and the board of governors of Bermuda College.

He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Richmond.
